Peter Bronson not only provides a detailed recounting of the tragic Beverly Hill Supper Club fire (Southgate, Kentucky, in 1977) but places it in historical context. It is a story about The Mob, greed, corruption and human nature and Mr. Bronson's story-telling skills are displayed throughout. The Beverly Hills Supper Club was the largest and most popular dining and entertainment venue in the region. The author's writing makes vivid the club and the era. He has carefully and scrupulously done his research in the records and archives and interviewed a number of individuals for the book. While this book cannot be considered a true history of the time and events as some things will never be known it is true enough.A part of the book I especially enjoyed was his reconstruction of the era especially in the 1960s and 1970s. His reimagined conversations and settings among the criminal element in the region made the book more enjoyable.In case you don't know, Peter Bronson is a journalist and former columnist for the Cincinnati Enquirer, unleashed from that paper's tether by the layoffs of 2009. Since then he has authored several books. I heard the author interviewed on a local morning radio show and knew immediately I wanted to read the book. As a relative newcomer to this region I had heard about the Beverly Hills Supper Club and know people who had been patrons and they knew some of the 175 people who died and the many others who were injured.
