This memoir truly captures the fallout from being partnered with a two-faced narcissist. Metz doesn't just examine the huge betrayal of her late husband's infidelity but she looks over the course of the relationship and reflects on the thousands of other ways she was betrayed by her partner. She accurately describes the gas lighting, cognitive dissonance, confusion, anguish and upheaval that comes from partnering with those who choose to be reckless with your life. Survivors of this type of betrayal and abuse may want to give this a read just for the validating reminder of how creepily similar these types are and how common it is to blame emotional depletion on yourself rather than on the parasitic nature of the narcissist. Metz beautifully captures the never-ending restlessness, boredom, shallow & reckless nature of her late husband along with the many careless ways that such toxic people can inflict pain, drama, and chaos into your life. The only thing I found that was somewhat tiresome in this book was the writing style. The story can be tangential and wordy - sometimes too descriptive. At times, I gathered that Metz was trying to prove her sexual worthiness by throwing in details of her sexual encounters - many of which felt random and unnecessary to the storyline...but given that she was betrayed in such a way, who could blame her for wanting to own that part of her narrative??..all in all, there were one liners in this book that hit the nail on the head and provided wisdom for what survivors of betrayal can anticipate on the journey when trying to find their center again.
