Best Edition Maggie the Mechanic: The Love & Rockets Library - Locas Book 1 with FREE EASY Reading!

First of all: Love & Rockets (both the "Locas" series by Jaime and the "Palomar" series by Gilbert) is an outstanding literary achievement. Seriously; easily one of the very greatest comics ever written. And while I'm also a particular fan of Jaime's work, I would not recommend that a new reader begin with the Maggie the Mechanic volume. Jaime had not yet found his groove and hadn't settled into the telling the kind of stories that make the Locas/Maggie series great. Here Jaime introduces many of the central characters that will populate his stories -- Maggie, Hopey, Penny Century, for example -- but the early stories of this volume struck me as slightly bizarre and juvenile. The "science fiction" aspects of these early stories (which drops out entirely in later volumes) doesn't really work. (I say this as a big fan of science fiction.) Maggie eventually becomes one of my all-time favorite fictional characters but in this volume she is not quite well-formed and she seemed to me something more of a giddy, girly stereotype than the fully-fleshed human she is later.To sum up, if you're interesting in exploring Jaime's Love & Rockets work, I'd strongly recommend skipping to the next Jaime volume, The Girl from H.O.P.P.E.R.S. (My first exposure to any Love and Rockets work was the very recent 'Love Bunglers' which was amazing; then I jumped back to the Perla La Loca volume and read through until his most recent work. Then went back again to the earlier volumes: The Girl from H.O.P.P.E.R.S. and Penny Century. I read Maggie the Mechanic last.) One needn't worry about skipping the first volume. It's not difficult at all to figure out what's going on in the later stories without the benefit of the first volume.
