I can't praise this series enough. I read through all 27 volumes in about two week's time and it blew me away. I, an avid manga reader and anime watcher, have tried to stay away from the mainstream popular series for no real reason. Then I decided to start with the ones that were popular because I can relate to those who adore the various series. I bought first book Fullmetal Alchemist on a whim and by the end of two weeks had downloaded all 27 volumes and sped through it faster than any other series save Hikaru no Go. I liked the plot, the characters were engaging, and the idea of alchemy is fascinating. I have not watched the animes in their entirety yet, but I figure it's unnecessary when the books are so powerful. A great read and definitely a series worth checking out, even if someone doesn't like to read the popular titles.
